When I look back on my progress so far, I realized how perfect psychology and marketing intertwine with one another in my professional and personal life. At the start, these professions may seem widely different. Psychology is the study of human behavior and the mind while marketing focuses on consumer behavior. But to me, they have one important factor in common, people. Both seek an end goal to understand people and their behaviors and needs building solutions that make the world an easier place on the mind.
My life with my special needs sister, showed my how to be patient, understanding, an how to be there for others. My mom's nickname of me "guardian angel"sticks with me as a tool to lead me through life with compassion. The early years of experiences with my sister by my side derived a passion in me to help those around me and lead me down a path of pursuing psychology.
In my time at the University of Miami, I switched from a communications major to psychology because of my profound curiosity to understand people in their actions, emotions, and motivations. Over time, I started to see the same conclusions being raised in other sectors that did not just combat mental health struggles. Marketing does not look to heal those with depression, but to understand the inner workings and motivations of an audience or target audience. This became interesting to me in my studies leading to me pursing a minor in marketing. I wanted to learn how to add empathy and strategizing in way that can engage with the world.
The combination of both psychology and marketing fostered in front of me through my two internships. At Chrysalis Health, I shadowing a psychologist each week doing one on one sessions with children and young adults. There was also a psychiatrist present and after each session I was able to talk to both a reflect on diagnosis's and psychology as whole. I was able to understand and put input in on treatment plans and evaluations. I was not solely about diagnosing each patient, but building trust and a meaningful relationship with the psychologist. At my advertising internship at the University of Miami's College of Arts and Sciences, I worked with a group of students under the digital marketing department to create content, run social media pages, new event ideas, and much more. The experience allowed me to learn about what draws people in and how to execute them into digital works. One of the best projects we did was asking students around campus triva question about the school and creating a compilation video to post on the instagram page. It led to foster community building just from small interactions. Within both experiences, I found that the most important characteristic to have as the ability to understand people.
In the future, I can picture myself finding a professional setting where I can combine both my love for psychology and marketing while doing good all at the same time. If its in a corporate setting, startup, or nonprofit, I want to make a positive impact that will last. I want my projects to matter and make a difference no matter how big or small.
Combining psychology and marketing is not totally about career plasticity, the only thing that matters to me is staying true to who I am and my purpose. It about walking through life as intentional as possible to everyone and with everything. It is to produce pieces that are meaningful and that inspire that bring about empathy, creativity, connection, and service. I am not only setting this path for myself, but other who care about the people around them as deeply as I do.
